Between teaching and editing my manuscript, my eyes got so tired that I ended up going to the optometrist and finding out I need a new glasses prescription. That will go some way toward explaining why I watched so many movies over the last month, during which I saw some new ones in the theater and caught up on some stuff I’d missed the first time around.

The reading links are—well, I’m trying not to bring so much doom and gloom to this culture roundup, because I know we’re all in that mode enough to begin with, but some of the horror of the worlds are unavoidable. From the confusing and emergent role of AI in schools and elsewhere to genocide in Gaza to questions of fashion and the significance of art books, my cultural diet tends to reflect the way in which life—for those of us who are lucky—is an ongoing and confounding whiplash between the grave and the frivolous.
