loved this. not sure if you're a smoothie gal, but i think avocado is good in them (makes them super creamy obv) and diced avocado freezes pretty well IME!
Thank you for validating my latest smoothie obsession: avocado + apple + ginger + vanilla protein. Still feeling a little guilty after reading Alicia’s eye-opening post…
We had about five or six trees when I was growing up in San Diego. What we get in Europe is disgusting mostly from Peru and the genocidal occupiers in the Levant. I actually planted a tree two years ago. My dad advised me on variety based on our climate and soil and we are getting our first fruit this year! The Sicilian ones are super expensive and tiny, not worth it at all, and it is always rich expats who try to gaslight me into believing they are good.
I loved reading this. Avocados also feel very indulgent to me. I don’t really buy them (I live in Bay Area, CA) but my parents sometimes get the big bag at Costco imported from Mexico and so they gave me 2 a week ago. Yesterday we made avocado toast and eggs for lunch which felt very fancy. This also makes me realize that both my husband and I have a grandparent that have/had an avocado tree in their yard so we have had an occasional experience with overabundance. But I think we are so used to the haas variety sometimes it is hard to figure out how best to eat others. I usually just go for lime and salt.
It’s so interesting how it can feel to eat avocado when you don’t usually! I’ve had to adjust to the variety grown here in PR, which has a lot more water in it—it’s best simply sliced and eaten with tomato in a little vinaigrette. Writing that makes me crave it so maybe I’m finally ready for avo season again 😂
I probably eat about 2/3 max avocados a year now (usually organic Spanish imported to Scotland) I do find them really tasty, but stopped eating them for ethical reasons and I don’t miss them anymore! Plus they’re sooo expensive in the UK now, it’s a habit we don’t really need - vegan or otherwise! Having just a few makes them feel pretty special and I try to get them to grow afterwards, it feels like a fun challenge/ novelty! 😂🥑
I was gonna tell you to dice them and freeze them for smoothies but someone beat me to it! Send them to your friends in NY where you can't get a good avocado to save your life ;) When I lived in Cali I would always send my East Coast friends passionfruit and they were overjoyed.
The complication here is that lots of avocado because of a hurricane = power is out, so not freezing anything. I make coconut condensed milk sometimes, though, so this might be nice!
Really loved this. Don't think I saw an actual avocado until I was in college. Was expecting an EXPLOSION of flavor when I tried it first but then it was just... fairly good? But I'm really gripped by this idea that I should absolutely love it. For some reason it's now turned into a psychological canary in the coal mine forme; when I'm able to buy avocados and make some avo toast loaded with some veggies or 'everything bagel' seasoning, things feel relatively stable and 'put together'. I'm helplessly and annoyingly millennial when it comes to this....
Right? Avocado holds such a random and strange place in our psyches as folks who didn’t grow up with them. I love them in some preparations; I couldn’t care less if I never ate one again. But when they’re there, I’m like, “ooooh don’t mind if I do” lol
I was born in Brazil and had an avocado tree in my backyard. I could go by without them, but it would be a stretch. I live in Corsica now, and we get imported ones. Although I am self-aware of the avocado mafia/business and its sustainability issues, it is too hard to let it go. It is like my genes call for them... I dream of having my trees here (the first one has been around for nine months now, and I pet it every day). Awww... avocado smoothies. My fav! I used to drink it every day before school as a child.
I had completely forgotten about that outcome of the hurricane! Way to take one for Mother Nature! I moved away from PR about 12 yrs ago. Avocado season was my favorite time of year. Now I dream of the day I can coordinate my vacation time and visits to the island so they coincide with peak avocado and quenepa season.
I was so obsessed with avocado season when I first moved here. It felt like a miracle! I might finally be ready for it again now after taking 2023 off 😂
Love this newsletter edition. Personally, avocados were everywhere when I was a kid growing up in SF…mainly at the markets in the Mission. I don’t remember really using it for anything else besides adding it to a rice bowl though and maybe in my sushi rolls since California Rolls were (and are) my fave. ☺️

Love smoothies! I am still dealing with my excess avocado trauma lol but this is great to know!!!

Great advice! I’m going to have to see whether I like avocado in a smoothie…!
loved this. and yeah definitely worth trying in sinh tố bơ!

oooh yeah that is a drag, to not be able to use the chill to mute the avocadoy taste when you've had enough of it!!

So curious why your husband despises them!? the texture?
You know, I never asked why! They don’t taste like anything to him—maybe one day we’ll get a really good variety and that’ll change.
