Such a diverse array of stories about daily food engagement!! Living in the Pacific Northwest I feel as though there is easy access to locally grown organic foods… but perhaps this also has to do with some of my privilege to afford those foods and have the mobility and time to find them! Feeling curious.
What I hope to do with this series is get people thinking about how much they control / don’t control what food they have — time and money are huge but our cities, regions, and cultures determine so much!
I love this conversation. Perhaps there is a lot to discover about the availability of good food… and it’s not always the first thing that is presented to us?
I love finding an apple tree or someone gives me a bag of apples from their tree.. I complain a bit about too much to do… and then I cook them into an applesauce and am in a state of disbelief and awe at the deliciousness and healthfulness of apples!!
Totally!!😂 And tomato, squash, green beans, stone fruit… even herbs!!😂 We have a community garden and so much grows! Excess goes to a senior center! There’s always more than enough!!
I have a horrible habit of grilling people about how they shop for groceries, how often they cook v. go out (particularly fascinated by the habits of empty nesters), and, especially, what they eat for breakfast, and now you can do it for me!
I used to kind of do that too… my grilling was tinged with judgement though as I really thought I was the purveyor of what was best to eat and where to shop for it. I have realized over time that everyone truly has their own reasons for what they eat and where they shop. In the end I think stepping toward how I love to eat, cook, shop is best and to do that… therefore supporting the causes, systems etc that matter to me. And I’m now feeling very curious about all of this after reading what others in these interviews are doing! Around the world no less!
So many bits and pieces in this are so relatable to how I shop and cook Entirely selfishly, I'd love to hear from someone in non-metropolitan England, just so I can see how they compare to my own experience.
I found out at the nail salon the other day that a chef is using WhatsApp to deliver $10 meals in the neighborhood! I love learning about this shit, whole worlds unknown to us!
loved loved reading this! so many thoughts but my biggest is yes you can ask people to pick their fruit! It’s one of the nicest most neighborly things about Phoenix. My mom used to send my friends home with two Trader Joe’s paper bags of our tangerines and I would come home from their houses with lemons and grapefruits

Love this—if you have any suggestions for folks to interview, please message me! Would love to get France in the mix.
