This collage format of writing made me want to write ~ it’s like prose poetry meets the essay meets the listicle etc…
Art Monsters sounds like a cool book. Have you read it?
P.S. I am on page 46 of No Meat Required and thinking about assigning the entire book in my Social Justice/Sustainability section of Intro to Sociology in the Fall. Added bonus that Ani makes a poster cameo in the intro 😊
I loved Art Monsters and all of Elkin’s work! Her No. 91/92 is fantastic, too, and short.
Ahhh thank you so much for reading the book and considering it! I am meeting a class in April who have read it as part of their food justice class—I’m nervous but it’s so cool to see it have that kind of life!
I don’t know much about art, but I am interested to check out her writing, thanks.
My students have read your work ~ the food justice post from a while back. They loved it! I have no doubt the students in April will be the same.
The SJS program on my campus might have a budget for a Zoom convo (probably not enough for travel—Chicago area—but I’m not sure…) if that’s something you do!
I’d love to, any time! I have done a lot of class visits. Next month I’ll be doing a day-long Earth Month visit to a school in Pennsylvania, which I’ll definitely write about.
Wanted to stand up and clap after reading this!! Bravo and congratulations on five tremendous years, I can't wait to see what the next five bring in your work.
5 years!! Congrats! Cheers to you doing it your way 🥳 thanks for being such a consistent source of inspiration. I know whenever your name lands in my inbox, I'll gain a new perspective and have something to mull over for the rest of the day. Can't wait to keep reading along.
Congrats on 5 years! What an incredible achievement, especially in this era of faddy internet trends. Your newsletter is consistenly one of my favourites 💕
I felt a huge weight go from me as I followed along with these concepts of fragmentation, "the minor," and finding new ways to say beautiful and important things to people. Not staying on the mountaintop, but an ability to visit it, through your own delighting in and taking seriously your interests, your work, your writing, and the cultural landscape around all of these, and then to bring the view back down into real life, which deserves as much sublime consideration as anything else. That's precisely how I see your work, why I've been inspired by it, and will continue to be. Thanks for this essay, I've been trying to find a comment that does justice to how I feel about it and five years of being your reader!
Gahhhh this means so much, truly!—it'll never not be an honor to be the subject of the clarity of your reading and ability to translate it into words. thank you always!!!
I am relatively new here, but it’s been a delight to read your essays over the past handful of months! I always also get something else to read or add to my TBR list from your pieces.
This particular piece is percolating the ideas of women, hunger, and fragmenting together—but oddly enough, in a positive way. If the fragment can be good —the interruption, the disjunction of line—then community and care work (and tending to the hunger as has often been deemed a woman’s job) can be too. Do we only see huge, linear pieces of work as the most valid form because we live in a world where the creators of that uninterrupted form have flourished?
So happy I found you 3 (?) years ago; yours was one of the first newsletters I subscribed to on substack. It’s been such a trip watching its evolution. Love how you play with form.
It feels impossible to put into words the effect you and your newsletter have had on my reading life, my thinking and, on many occasions, on my enthusiasm for reading and thinking when that enthusiasm had otherwise waned to a worrying degree. I'm so grateful for you and your work, and I often thank my lucky stars that I came across you in this life
5 years! Congratulations on doing it your own way, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Your essays and the vast topics you've shared over the years have given me so much to think about, learn, and implement in my own life. Your essays make Mondays so enjoyable! I am happy to have found my way here and I am glad I still have some unread essays to read from the early days when I was not a subscriber yet.
I appreciated this so much and wanted to share how inspiring and mind-opening I find your work—cheers to five years! I am always gleaning new things to read and new writers to learn about from your newsletter. Now I need to go track down a copy of “Issue and Taboo”!
That means a lot to hear! It's in the collection of Lippard's writing titled The Pink Glass Swan—I've been reading a scan of it and can't wait to have a print copy of my own!
This left me teary-eyed. Congratulations on 5 years!!
Thank you!!! 🥹

Anyway THANKS for your writing!
Thank you! This is so beautiful and true!
You're an inspiration to so many but especially to me to just do the work. I wish I was more organized though
Thank you ❤️
