There’s something in the Pope Francis story that feels so familiar and so political (& so Obama). An individual of great charisma and potential rises to lead a rotten, decrepit institution, seen as representative of those underserved and abused by the same institution; but his efforts at reform are stymied by the institution itself, through its own internal surge-protectors and bulkheads (that were erected to safeguard against change). I still love these individuals even though they can’t fix the institution they’ve been tasked with leading, because I don’t know how to fix them either.
