I'm from L.I. too and much of what you say really resonates. I don't think I ever thought it completely through though. But the asterisk, bridge and tunnel, so close, yet so far, I remember feeling those feelings throughout high school- but what was it exactly that wasn't just right?? It was in my bones. I left for school, got halfway across the country. It took a long time to appreciate (or rather admit I appreciated) what the suburbs did offer. Thank you for this.
