Such a beautiful read :) Whenever I moved into a new apartment, I always wondered who used the kitchen in the past and how they used it. Or who's using it now after I left?

“A real kitchen” —- I love this. And btw I, too, live in Suffolk County!

I am reading this from a desk in Huntington Village: overlooking Gellerman Orthodontics, diagonal from Heckscher Park. All of what you wrote felt so familiar, except the part about $1,600/month rent; that seems preposterous nowadays :)

That is incredible! I know precisely where you are. The second apartment where I started to bake also overlooked Heckscher Park. And yes, I noted the rent because of how good and nostalgic it seems now. This was 10 years ago!

Loved reading this! And I always appreciate the photos you share of your kitchen. Our old kitchen was huge and had lots of natural light but it was horribly laid out, no island and barely a foot of counter space, and the hood vent didn't work. Conversely my kitchen now has lots of counter space and a sensible layout, but it's in the centre of the house with no window so it's always stuffy and the lighting feels grossly yellow in photos. Truly you can never have it all as a renter!
